Gabbro CabinThe Gabbro Cabin is situated, 2 miles from the area where you leave you car and your cares, on a remote peninsula of beautiful Birch Lake. This lake is over 20 miles long with more than 65 miles of shoreline - 90 percent of which is federally owned. This means that Birch Lake is mostly undeveloped and will likely remain so. The cabin and sauna are only 15 feet from the shore and are surrounded by red pine and birch. The view from the living area and bedrooms is spectacular - you can look miles down the lake or directly across the little bay at the ledge rock cliffs that epitomize this area. Fishing in Birch Lake is hard to beat. Huge and plentiful northern pike abound as well as excellent walleye, crappie and bluegill populations.
For wildlife enthusiasts, moose and deer are often spotted in the quiet bay adjacent to the cabin. Get up early and take a dawn paddle. Loons are numerous and are likely to serenade you morning and evening. Also, the cabin is located right on the territorial edge of the Birch Lake and Nip Creek wolf packs. So, imagine a quiet evening, sitting on the dock howling - don't be surprised if you get an answer!
The cabin itself was originally constructed 50 years ago as a hunting camp and distillery. We have remodeled it using all native wood with hardwood floors, large new windows and a cozy wood burning stove. The furniture is mostly handmade and comfortably rustic. An aluminum canoe and a 14 foot boat are part of the package, enabling you to explore the many quiet bays, islands and small creeks or just for cruising the miles of undeveloped shoreline. The cabin is also senior accessible being very close to the dock with flat terrain. The floor plan of the cabin is all one level with only one step to get in or out. Access 2 miles by water.
Although these cabins do not have indoor plumbing or electricity, they are comfortably outfitted. Most of our cabins have a traditional Finnish sauna for bathing and relaxation. We supply fresh drinking water from Ely and propane for lighting, cooking and refrigeration. In addition, each cabin has a clean, comfortable outhouse. Also, we escort you to your cabin and provide help getting gear in and out. A canoe comes with each cabin.
